Set Your Goals, Your Way!

In this ARE guest blog, Bayo Igoh, a business coach at Bigoh Coaching and one of our dedicated Routes2Success role-models, sends a clear message to all our readers looking to make a fresh start in the new year.

It’s a new year, and people are talking about New Year’s resolutions. I get it – fresh starts and big goals can feel exciting. The thing is, other people often try to push us to achieve certain things just because they think it’s important. But what do you want?

I reckon the best goals come from inside us – stuff we’re passionate about and want to get better at.

Maybe you care about racial justice and want to set a goal around making a difference in that area. Or maybe you want to boost your skills to prepare for a certain job or course.

Whatever your goal, dream, objective, make sure…”You do you!”

Rather than compare yourself to others, reflect on what matters most to you. Let’s be real, sticking to goals is tough when you lose motivation. So get support! Talk to friends who empower you, set mini-milestones, and reward yourself for progress.

Take that one-step at a time. Have a plan. See it through, with the support, guidance, and determination you have from within and around you.

Whatever your dreams, whatever your goal, they’ll not become reality unless you take action. Turn your dreams and goals into reality by taking action.

Most of all, don’t stress if plans change or you mess up.

Goals help us grow, but don’t define us. Keep trying new things, and you’ll discover so much about yourself this year. You got this!

Bayo is a valuable member of our Routes2Success team, helping inspire young Black, Asian and minority ethnic people to achieve their potential.

When asked about one piece of advice he would give to a young person today he told ARE:

…always be open to learning and growing. Life is a journey of constant learning and self-improvement, and there is always room to grow and develop new skills and perspectives. Embrace new experiences, be curious, and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. Learn from your mistakes and don’t be discouraged by failure, as it is often a stepping stone to success. Additionally, try to surround yourself with positive and supportive people, as they will be a valuable asset in your personal and professional growth.”

If you’d like to find out more about volunteering, register your interest online, and a member of our team will be in touch or email Nisha Bhatia, Project Co-ordinator.
