Our Approach

Any strategic or transformative work is a journey, a journey that requires reflection, pause, support, resources and genuine commitment. A journey that needs to be fuelled with expertise and insights and a journey that needs to have a destination with a road map.

Grounded in a deep understanding of organisational dynamics and the importance of fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging, Action for Race Equality draws on expertise gained over 30 years of supporting public, private and third sector organisations.

Our approach to EEDIB (Equality, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) provides bespoke, expertly designed programmes and interventions to enable organisations to assess, improve and build equitable, diverse and inclusive cultures.

We offer tailored training, facilitation, coaching and consultancy services to meet the challenges of delivering to a diverse population.

Insight-driven organisational development

ARE training is designed and led by experienced facilitators using engaging, thought-provoking techniques to engender a process of behavioural change. The sessions are participatory and have a combination of trainer/facilitator input, group discussions and group exercises and will ensure that the environment is comfortable, safe and respects confidentiality and differing views.

Tailored to fit needs

We believe in providing clients with services tailored to their individual needs. We’ll agree the specification with you and agree a package of support tailored to meet your organisation’s needs.

Values-led

Our team of specialist consultants and advisors support leadership teams with the strategic thinking and practical approaches to EEDIB (Equity, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging) within their organisations.

Facilitated conversations and ‘difficult’ conversations about Race and Racism
Anti-Racism strategies and roadmaps
Audits/reviews of practices including recruitment processes and marketing/comms plans.
Input at ‘design stage’ of new projects with independent and specialist EEDIB lens.
Creating accessible guides and tips of how to engage with the ‘agenda’

Coaching

With the pace and volume of work, leaders and aspiring leaders need a safe space for reflection. Specifically, with EEDIB in mind and often with strategic plans written up, this safe space allows for a space to think, reflect, pause and strategically decipher the what, why and how of implementation. Training and workshops

ARE training is designed and led by experienced facilitators using engaging, thought-provoking techniques to engender a process of behavioural change. The sessions are participatory and combine trainer/facilitator input, group discussions and group exercises to help ensure a comfortable, safe environment that respects confidentiality and differing views.

We believe training or workshops are a small part of a wider approach or strategy aiming to make systemic change and embed EEDIB as a core thread throughout the organisation.

We also appreciate and recognise that participants will have diverse learning styles for which we ensure a range of engagement techniques are used including handouts, quiz, video, discussion, exercises and reading lists to take away. Our workshops can be delivered online or in-person.

Listening sessions

Independent and confidential listening sessions for staff in any size of organisation are crucial for honest conversations that lead to genuine change.

ARE has facilitated one off and a series of short listening sessions for a range of organisations and companies, gauging what is working well, how staff are feeling, what are their experiences, all of which is feed back in a confidential way to help shape what needs to change. The sessions also give a sense of ownership as the space is created to give staff a chance to shape the future.

Listening sessions

ARE has experienced facilitators to design and host staff away days, strategy days and team building days that invigorate team dynamics, enhance collaboration, and foster a shared vision for the future.

Consultancy

As a critical friend, we help with a Full Culture Reset, i.e. guiding organisations through the process of cultural change. Defining, reviewing or realigning organisational vision, mission, purpose and values to a culture of inclusion and belonging and ensuring organisational values are reflected in culture and practices.

We help develop strategic plans, action plans and road maps that focus on activation, measuring and tracking progress.

Our aim is to help you empower you and your staff team to create a culture of belonging

Popular Workshops for 2025

We develop training content and resources to ensure staff are respected and valued and feel confident and knowledgeable about the language, concepts and tools to adopt inclusive behaviours in day-to-day operations.

Importantly, our approach will create a safe space for participants to question and discuss situations, behaviours, language and attitudes that impact inclusion in the workspace as well as tangible and practical tools and frameworks to interrupt negative bias, discrimination and micro-aggressions.

Interrupting bias

The workshop gives participants an overview of EEDIB (Equity, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging) but focuses on the what, why and how of unconscious and unchallenged bias with a view to examine how to undercut the influence of this form of bias on workplace practices inside and outside your organisation; from recruitment and retention, comms & marketing, service design, supply chains and contracts to team relationships.

The session will share a practical framework to help question and interrupt bias and tackle micro-behaviours and discuss the importance of personal responsibility and how it affects team and organisation cultures.

The facilitation allows for a safe space to reflect on organisation practices – past and present, understand the impact on the business and people, and potentially open a thought process to explore what can be done to change personal and workplace practices to embed your equality, equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EEDIB) strategy as a core thread in all policies and practices.

Equal conversations

How can we have an organisation culture that allows spaces to listen, to listen to voices that are often on the margins of decision making and power. How can strategies be authentically informed by voices from stakeholders (internal and external), that have valuable insights, ideas and solutions. Creating safe, engaging and authentic spaces is vital for any business growth model.

ARE has been delivering facilitating independent and confidential listening sessions that capture voices that identify challenges, limitations but also open up creative solutions. We also offer workshops that explore how to incorporate an inclusive approach to listening and engaging with staff and stakeholders.

The workshop or facilitation enables organisations to develop mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders including not-for-profits and small businesses that are led by people from diverse communities through conversations that take account of the power differential.

Sexism, misogyny and racism

This is an informative and interactive session using scenarios with tools to examine sexism, misogyny and racism with an intersectional approach, looking at the difference between Sexism and Misogyny and how it intersects with Racism; Misogyny – the context and facts; and the impact on the individual and organisation.

The session explores real examples in the private, public and work environments, a space to recognise when and where it is taking place and importantly practical ways to interrupt behavioural and systemic misogyny.

language matters

This session looks at the importance and impact of language when developing and implementing any form of anti-racism work or strategies.

By being intentional about the words we use (and don’t use), we play a small part in breaking the cycle of systemic racism and oppression including the implicit use of colonial language and terms that impact Black, Asian and Minority communities of colour.

The session looks at language through an internal and external context from the perspective of communications (written, spoken and visual), strategy, processes and relationships.

Our approach is to create safe spaces to explore the topic, discuss the challenges faced both by individuals and the organisation but importantly focus on the solutions, i.e. practical ways of initiating change to both behaviours and processes.
