Marcia is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer whose business Marogmi sells Afro-Caribbean inspired hand painted patterns for home textiles.
Marcia saw that there was a gap in selling items by Black designers in museum gift shops and wanted some of her art to be the first step in addressing this. Over the course of the programme with the dedicated support from consultants, this then developed into her setting up her own website to sell her designs and prints on home décor items like tea towels, tablecloths, cushions and wall art.
Marcia spent the grant on items that were essential to be able to get her business off of the ground, including equipment to be able to make the art (such as a heat press for printing, a sewing machine, ink and fabric). She was also able to set up her website with this funding as the main place to buy her items.
While on the programme, Marcia attended the masterclasses that focussed on marketing and promoting a business, as well as an Action Learning Set on ‘how to increase engagement with clients’ where she learned an invaluable lesson in delegation and the importance of not doing everything on your own when you may need an expert or other support.
