How does a traumatic event affect any one person? When it comes to tragedies such as the Windrush scandal, it can be impossible to imagine the full impact on families, communities and individuals.

Make More, have worked with hundreds of people whose lives have been profoundly affected by the Windrush Scandal, helping them navigate the Windrush compensation scheme and, just as importantly, listening to their stories.
Many grieve the connections they’ve lost, the broken relationships, fear, mistrust and mistreatments they’ve had to suffer.
For some, the acknowledgement of what happened to them and the Government’s financial reparations may bring closure – but for many, the legacy of the Windrush Scandal and its impact on mental health is something they continue to struggle with.

Make More is a UK charity organisation whose mission is to help underrepresented communities through challenges, such as Windrush applications, support and research, skills training, S.T.E.M. education programmes and well-being initiatives.

We’re delighted that Make More, an organisation ARE funds to provide advocacy support to Windrush Survivors, has secured funding from the National Lottery to deliver wellbeing, therefore providing holistic support with their Healing through Justice Project.”

What is the “Healing Through Justice” Project?
Having seen up close the tremendous hardship caused by the Windrush Scandal, Make More is launching a new programme offering free, culturally sensitive mental health services to help those affected by the trauma of the Windrush Scandal and the complex feelings of anxiety, isolation, and loss that it has caused.
Our approach will be specific to the Windrush Scandal survivors, providing compassionate, intentional, and accessible support to promote healing and build emotional resilience.
How Does “Healing Through Justice” Work?
This initiative will include one-to-one and group-based sessions, delivered by a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) practitioner, with a total of 240 hours provided over 24 months.
Our one-to-one sessions will be held at the Walsall Hub, Birmingham (the location where Make More carries out Windrush Scandal compensation appointments), but phone-based options will also be available to those who need them.
We will also offer 12 informal group CBT sessions (2 hours long, with a maximum of 15 attendees each) to help participants rebuild a sense of belonging, community and trust through shared experience. Anyone requiring longer-term or more intensive support will be referred to one of our trusted mental health referral partners.
Who Can Participate?
Anyone affected by the Windrush Scandal can reach out to take part in our programme. Whether you have or haven’t engaged with any Windrush programmes or schemes before, are currently applying for a Windrush compensation scheme, or have completed this process, you can take part for some or the full length of the programme.
You do not need a referral from a medical professional or any other official body. Simply contact us via email at support@make-more.org or book directly through here.
Why Are Make More Launching “Healing Through Justice”?
The Windrush Scandal has caused devastation to tens of thousands of people over several decades. Our work at Make More has helped us meet numerous families who have been battling with unjust legislation, inequality and abuse with no health support or compassion. While the UK Government has made efforts to financially compensate those affected, little has been done to extend support for the lived experiences of people.
With this project, we want to place the human aspect of this tragedy first. We are speaking directly with communities to continue designing our “Healing Through Justice” programme in a way that best serves the unique needs of Windrush Scandal survivors.
