Education opens doors.
Schools, colleges, and training institutions play a vital role in building strong communities, and setting young people up to have positive futures. We want to create a society where all children, irrespective of the barriers put down by race, can thrive.

mentoring young people
At ARE, we believe community-led organisations like ours are well-placed to work collaboratively with professionals across the primary, secondary, further and higher education spaces. Together, we can design better services for young Black, Asian and Mixed heritage people, leading to better outcomes for young people and their families.
We welcome partnerships with schools, colleges and training organisations on our programmes and projects. We co-design bespoke activities and bring our own tested, and culturally-competent approach to working with young people, particularly those who are disengaged from learning.

How we can help
Primary and Secondary Schools
Routes2Success is a role model and mentoring programme aimed at supporting young people aged 10-24 from ethnic minority backgrounds. Young people are provided with positive role models from similar backgrounds who will support them with careers advice, entrepreneurial skills, making positive choices and guidance to overcome obstacles.
Session details
Our workshops are tailored, so each session looks different to each cohort but will have key elements in common. Through three group sessions, we aim to inspire young people to think practically about the best way to realise their full potential in education and employment and equip them with tools to manage their social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Working closely with the class teacher at all times, we can also identify students who would benefit from 1:1 mentoring sessions over a 6-session period following on from the initial group workshops.
Our activities are interactive, and centre on the young people reflecting on their own educational journeys and careers aspirations. Previous themes have included [X], [X] or [X]. The workshops are led by volunteers who come from all walks of life and have diverse backgrounds. They have one thing in common – their commitment to being a positive, visible presence in the lives of young people.
Race Equality Action Projects
From 2023, we’ve been offering schools the chance to run their own youth-led action project. Called Race Equality Action Projects, young people are supported by our expert role-model team with planning, executing and evaluation a project start to finish, on a topic that matters to them.
Colleges and Further Education institutions
The further education sector offers vital routes into education and training that lead many young people into apprenticeships, higher education and employment.
We believe further education colleges and training organisations, can, and should do more to understand the drivers behind figures that show that the figures for Black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups are still too low. Much of our work here is through our employment stream, supporting career guidance and post-16 choices. Email us if you’re interested in:

Testimonials & case studies
“I just wanted to send a quick message to say thank you for the workshops that you have put on for us over the last few weeks. The students have continued to talk about it and their positivity and language has really changed which is fantastic.”
Assistant Headteacher, Enfield
“It has been an absolute pleasure working with you this year. We are extremely grateful for all that you have done with our Year 9 students. The workshops earlier in the year which focused on motivating our Year 9 girls have had a significant impact on students such as M, who we have seen become more confident and focused in lessons. The boys that worked with you last year and have continued to do so this year, have all also made significant progress in terms of their behaviour and attitude towards their learning.”
Head of Year 9, Hammersmith
