Lift engineers, or lift technicians, install, refurbish, service and repair electrical and hydraulic lifts and escalators. They also work on stair lifts, vehicle mounted lifts, restaurant ‘dumb waiters’ and patient hoists like those found in hospitals and nursing homes. “My entry into the lift industry was through an apprenticeship programme which lasted four years”, says the author of this careers guide.
