On 22nd June 2023, the UK marked the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush ship in Tilbury in 1948. It brought with it one of the first large groups of passengers from the Caribbean and other countries ushering the start of significant post-war migration from the Commonwealth to the UK following World War II. The contributions of this generation, and those who came in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, were integral to rebuilding Britain following essential labour shortages, and has had an immeasurable impact on British social, political and cultural life.
To remember the legacy of this generation – now known as the Windrush Generation – Action for Race Equality produced a mini-series, asking staff members to look at the histories of migration within their own families. Take a look to see the various journeys and experiences making up the microcosm of our team!
More stories will be added throughout 2023 as we collect young Windrush Voices from our Windrush 75 competition.
