Action for Race Equality (ARE) is looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Finance Officer / Associate to provide vital financial support to the Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive.

The postholder will help manage ARE’s finances, including budgets, reporting, and payroll, ensuring strong financial control across our programmes. You will be a team player who shares our commitment to tackling race inequality and supports our mission to create fair opportunities for Black, Asian and Mixed heritage young people.
This role is open to both salaried and freelance candidates, depending on experience and preference, either may be considered.

Background to the role
Action for Race Equality (ARE) is a national race equality charity, and we have been running programmes and influencing policy since 1991.
We work collaboratively to support, empower and inspire young people and strengthen civil society organisations that support them. We use our national voice to influence race equity in education, employment, enterprise and the criminal justice system.
Commitment
As Finance Officer you will:
- Prepare and present bi-monthly management accounts, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
- Develop, monitor, and report on project budgets in collaboration with project managers.
- Oversee payroll processes and maintain accurate financial records.
- Allocate funding to staff positions based on budget considerations and funding sources.
- Review grant contracts and other income for VAT and tax implications.
- Support audit and compliance processes, ensuring adherence to financial policies and regulations.
- Provide financial forecasts and long-term planning support to inform strategic decisions.
- Enter data into the accounts package and reconcile bank records.
- Provide general financial support and ad-hoc analysis to aid decision-making.
Remuneration
Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience.
Hours: Approx. 28–35 hours per month, with more work required at the beginning and end of each month.
Contract type: Open to salaried employment or freelance associate arrangement.
Location: Hybrid – at least two days per month in the London office.
Contract duration: 1-year fixed-term (for salaried employees).
Annual leave (employees only): 28 days per year plus bank holidays, pro rata.
Pension (employees only): 8% employer contribution.
Person Specification
The post holder will have:
- Demonstrate proven experience in a finance or accounting role.
- Work accurately and efficiently under limited supervision.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and external partners.
- Uphold confidentiality and high professional standards.
- Be motivated by ARE’s mission and values.
Skills:
- Strong analytical and numerical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Office.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- Professional certification (e.g. ACCA, CIMA) is desirable.
Personal qualities:
- Ethical, reliable, and committed to continuous learning.
- Able to work independently and as part of a small team.
- Proactive, adaptable, and solution-focused.
- Passionate about equality, inclusion, and anti-racism.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of financial reporting, tax, and VAT.
