ARE statement on the Bondi Beach attack

Action for Race Equality are saddened by the attack that took place over the weekend at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, near Sydney, Australia.

Carrying out an attack of this kind against the Jewish community at an event marking the first day of their Festival of Lights, is a horrendous racist attack.

While details are still to fully emerge, it is clear that the attack has taken place against the backdrop of the racist antisemitic rhetoric which has become commonplace both in the UK and globally.

It was only a couple of months ago, in early October, that the Jewish community in Heaton Park were victims of a similar gun attack. These communities will again feel vulnerable and exposed at a time when the message should be ‘peace and love’.

We urgently need a serious commitment by the Government to look at all the structures which support racism and to dismantle them totally, so that communities can live safe lives free from abuse and violence.  We continue to hold concerns about all racial and religious tension across the world from Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan and elsewhere. Our enduring

wish is that all communities come together in peace, strength, solidarity, resilience, and mutual support.
