In honour of the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which was marked globally on Monday 21st March with the 2022 theme ‘Voices for Action against Racism”, ARE is delighted to launch our Racial Terminology project.
This is a brand new initiative that aims to understand how racialised terminology in the UK has evolved. It will also provide a space to voice and shape the way racial terminology is used today.
Racial terminology is constantly evolving in the UK. Following the recent Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, organisations, as well as media outlets, have been using a range of terms to describe people who are Black, Brown, Asian and of Mixed heritage.
We’ve launched the Racial Terminology project in an effort to capture the thoughts and perspectives of those from Black, Asian and Minority ethnic backgrounds. We believe that this will help to reshape the way racial terminology is used by putting those most impacted at the heart of the discussion.

As part of the project, we are hosting two online different focus group sessions to give Black, Brown, Asian, mixed heritage people, and Gypsy, Roma and Travellers, input into terminology use and practice.
The focus groups will be held on Zoom on the following dates:
Session for young people aged 15-24: Thursday 12th May, 4pm – 5.30pm
